Music

Welcome to the Music Ministry at Sacred Heart Parish in Haworth, NJ. Our music ministry is open to all and offers a comprehensive Children's Choir program, Adult Choir, Handbell choir, Cantor program (including training workshops,) and opportunities instrumental soloists and concerts. We are committed to bringing the highest level of music to each Mass Soli Deo Gloria (for the Glory of God.)

"Those who sing pray twice" are the words of St. Augustine and a main tenet of the Vatican II parish music ministry philosophy. Our music ministry at Sacred Heart offers numerous opportunities for those to become actively involved. The Adult Choir presents music for worship and at the 10am mass each Sunday. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in church and one does not have to have previous experience to join. All voice parts are open. The choir sings a wide range of styles from Gregorian Chant to contemporary works. Select choir members also serve as Cantors for all masses. Singers receive training in voice and music theory and cantor workshops are available throughout the year. Our Children's Choir sings once a month at the 10am and is always open to new members in grades 2 through 8. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 4pm in church. This is a great way for children to become involved, learn the spirit of volunteerism, as well as social and musical skills that will last a lifetime. Children's choir members also serve as members of the Sacred Heart Handbell Choir.

The Sacred Heart Music Ministry is not only a place where one learns about music, it is where one uses music as a vessel to learn about and communicate our Faith by using one of God's greatest gifts, the gift of voice and song. It is truly a great way to build and share our love for the Lord.

Weddings

Fr. Stephen and the staff of Sacred Heart Church are honored to be part of one of the most important days of your life - your wedding day. We are so happy that you have chosen to seal your commitment to each other and to God through the sacrament of marriage.

On behalf of the church family of Sacred Heart, we congratulate you both! May God grant you a long, happy, healthy, fulfilled, prosperous and spiritual life together.

Please have a look at the wedding brochure to use as a guideline for planning your wedding ceremony. In addition, we have provided a list of the music selections from which to choose the songs for your ceremony.

Funerals

Planning the liturgy of a funeral is a time of reflection and remembrance of a loved one. Our hope is to plan a liturgy where the readings and the music selections reflect the person's faith and celebrates the deceased's life in the context of the Mass and the faith of our community.

We encourage you to call us soon after the death. It is also possible to pre-plan the liturgy of a funeral if the death of a loved one is imminent. The personal planning of the funeral Mass is an opportunity for family members to participate in the liturgy. We also provide a Vigil for the Deceased (Wake Service) to take place at the funeral home.

Family members may do the readings and bring up the gifts. For the readings, we will help you choose:

1 Old Testament reading
1 New Testament reading
Prayer of the Faithful

You may also assign 4 to 6 people to put the pall cloth on the coffin and 2 family members to bring the gifts to the altar at the Offertory.

In addition, a short 2 minute eulogy (words of remembrance) may be prepared by a family member and read at the beginning of Mass.

Four hymns are selected to be sung at Mass. Please refer to our music list for the hymn suggestions.

Please be sure to let us know if there is anything we can do for you or your family at this particular time to make things less burdensome. We would be very pleased to have the opportunity to be of assistance.
